GamesRustWipes, saving and decay

Forced wipe day

Facepunch releases a Rust update on the first Thursday of every month at 19:00 UTC (3:00 AM Friday Philippine time). Every server must update, and the update forces a map wipe: the old map and bases cannot load on the new version. Blueprints only wipe when Facepunch says so.

After the update is out, restart your server from the panel  so it downloads the new version, then update Oxide and your plugins. Players cannot join until the server matches their game.

Wipe it yourself

⚠️

Wipes cannot be undone. Make a backup in the Backups tab first.

  1. Stop the server.
  2. In Files, open server/rust (the folder name matches your server identity).
  3. Delete what you want to wipe:
    • Map only: files ending in .map and .sav (including .sav.1, .sav.2 and so on).
    • Map and blueprints: the above plus player.blueprints.*.db.
    • Everything players have: also delete the other player.*.db files.
  4. Start the server. It builds a fresh map from your seed and size.

To get a different map at the same time, change the seed or size first; see Managing worlds. Keep cfg (your admins, bans and settings) and the oxide folder unless you want those gone too.

Server settings file

Settings that are not on the Startup tab go in server/rust/cfg/server.cfg, one per line. Create the file if it does not exist. The server reads it every time it starts.

decay.scale 0.5 server.saveinterval 600

Save interval

server.saveinterval is how often the world saves, in seconds. The default is 600 (10 minutes). Saving more often loses less on a crash but can cause a short hitch on big maps.

Building decay

decay.scale multiplies how fast unprotected buildings fall apart. 1 is normal, 0.5 is half speed, 2 is double, and 0 turns decay off. Buildings inside a stocked Tool Cupboard do not decay in any case.

Game mode

Rust has three official modes, set with server.gamemode in server.cfg or on the Startup tab if your server lists it:

ModeWhat changes
vanillaStandard Rust
softcoreYou keep part of your gear on death and can recover the rest at a reclaim terminal
hardcoreFewer helpers such as map markers and some interface aids, for a harsher game

Changing the mode on an existing world is safest with a wipe. Restart after any change.
